RUFF WITH THE SMOOTH! Q&A WITH RUFF AND HUDDLE CREATIVE DIRECTOR LUCY BRICE

Ruff and Huddle is a brand after my heart celebrating fashion for little boys (and now girls), who take their style kudos from the coolest streets of London and tongue in cheek slogans reminiscent of my 90s teenager years, without messing with quality and practicality – we’re talking clothing for boys after all. Some of my favourite pieces are the bomber jackets and printed tracksuits.

I managed to pin down Creative Director and mum of two Lucy Brice to find out how she keeps her style after nine, juggling motherhood with a successful business.

How old are your children?

I have 2 boys – Rufus 5 and Hudson 3.

Favourite place to shop for them?

We like to make a big thing about going to Selfridges and can loose ourselves in the kids toy department for hours – it’s a wonderland! Kids on 4 also carries our favourite brands as well as Ruff and Huddle – unfortunately when your mum and dad has a brand, you don’t really wear much else.

Do they enjoy fashion too?

Absolutely! They like new Nike’s (bouncy and go faster shoes) especially. They have their favourite pieces out of the Ruff and Huddle line, Rufus loves the reflective Spaceman MA-1 and Hudson loves anything soft and snuggly – at the moment he only wants to wear our Chenille Knit from our AW14 holiday range.

Has motherhood affected your sense of style or self?

I wear fewer heels, there’s a lot of running around.
What’s your working wardrobe essentials?

I generally wear a good pair of jeans and loving my new Marc Jacobs Chelsea Boots. I was bought an Acne Leather Jacket as a ‘pushing present’ 5 years ago after Rufus was born and that gets a lot of use still!

What are your can’t live without beauty buys?

Kiehl’s Creme De Corps – once you use it you can’t go back to anything else!

What’s the hardest beauty regime you’ve found to maintain?

Good hair – running round after the kids in all weathers means I have adopted the au natural (dragged through a hedge backwards) look.

You find £20 in your pocket, what do you buy as a style treat?

A basic white topshop tee.

How do you stay in shape?

Apart from running around after the children not really that much at the moment. I used to run daily after my youngest was born but unfortunately I can’t find the time to maintain that right now.

What inspired you to set up Ruff and Huddle?

The lack of inspiring and affordable kids clothes available for boys. Also a desire to start something for myself after Hudson was born and not be tied to a 9-5 job working for someone else.

If you could see any celebrity kid wearing your clothes, who would it be?

Cruz Beckham obviously!

What is your Ruff & Huddle must buy this season?

For AW14 my favourite piece is the Orange Eski Boy Parka – I was determined this season to create a technical jacket that you would feel confident sending your kid to school in when the weather is bad – the Eski Boy Parka is wind proof, waterproof and incredibly warm.

Can you give me a sneak peak into the inspiration for SS15?

Our inspiration for SS15 is travel – we started of our design sessions at the start of the process with the Dr. Seuss quote “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go
What are some of the pressures/ joys of being a working mum?

My time is so stretched so every second I spend with the kids is sacred – we are a really active family and are out and about all the time so it can sometimes be exhausting! I love taking inspiration from my kids and seeing their reaction when we show them our prototypes we feed off them and their energy in everything we do.
